Event: Westcott Introduction to Political Theology with Dr Jenny Leith

Everything is political! An opportunity to get to grips with the field of Political Theology, this session will introduce you to the key themes and ideas in both historical and contemporary Christian political theologies.

Drawing on key perspectives (e.g. Augustine & Aquinas) on the nature of government which still shape how we think about issues such as state violence and human rights today, we’ll encounter critical and liberatory voices from the 20th and 21st centuries including queer, feminist and black theologies. How do these voices within the Christian tradition serve as sources for our own political theologies today?

Dr Jenny Leith is Lecturer in Christian Ethics at Westcott House. Her research brings together political theology, ecclesiology, and spirituality, and she is the author of Political Formation: Being Formed by the Spirit in Church and World (SCM Press, 2023). This research grew out of several years spent working as a parliamentary researcher and in social policy.
