Event: Westcott Introduction to Tough Texts in the Old Testament with Revd Dr Naomi Wormell

The Old Testament, or Hebrew Scriptures, is Jesus’ Bible, but sometimes we can find it hard to read as our Bible. Some of the readings set for the Easter Eve Vigil can be particularly hard for us to read, especially on a night when we want to share the bright light of the risen Jesus with the world but are being asked to face stories of darkness and destruction. The Sacrifice of Isaac (Genesis 22), The Crossing of the Red Sea (Exodus 14) and The Song of the Sea (Exodus 15) are all passages that can discomfort our sensibilities.

Together we will consider why these texts might make us, as contemporary readers, feel uncomfortable; look at some ways these texts have been read and used for worship, and think about how we can engage with the mystery of God through them. As we read and discuss these texts, we will prepare to celebrate the feast ourselves, but also prepare to share these texts with our congregations in ways that will be life-giving and life-affirming at Eastertide.

Revd Dr Naomi Wormell is Lecturer in Old Testament at Westcott House.  She is also a parish priest who has worked in rural ministry for the past fifteen years.  She currently has four small rural parishes near Newmarket.  Naomi is passionate about good preaching, allowing the Bible to speak to our lives today.
